Prehistoric Fleas Would Probably Eat Your Dog If They Still Existed [Insects]

Their descendants are happy to just suck blood and pass along parasites to small mammals, but the hugeprehistoric fleas from 165 million years ago were equipped with saw-like projections around their mouth—for penetrating thick dino hides—that would probably make short work of a Chihuahua. More »

ChromeLite: experience the ASCII Web of yesteryear

ChromeLite ASCII extension
Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here's your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn't really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted -- such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) -- and some fun ASCII art, but that's about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work -- so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools' joke -- and indeed, an annoying 'you can uninstall this!' message appears at the top of every page -- but we're kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.

Nikon D4 hands-on with sample images, video

Remember when we were in a tizzy about the Nikon D4, way back in January? We got to play with this tank of a DSLR a bit, but sadly weren't permitted to actually publish any of the photos or video that we shot with the thing. Sure, we've seen some samples of it in action, but it's not quite the same. Thankfully, the company made our late-February that much better, allowing us to take the D4 on a jaunt around the city, a couple of weeks ahead of its mid-March launch. We strolled around Washington Square Park and 6th avenue, with the beast of a camera in-hand, shooting tourists and scenery, before popping by a subway station to have a go with the camera's purported excellent low-light capabilities that we've been hearing so much about. Click on through to take a look at some sample video.

Hands-on with FXI's Cotton Candy, now available for pre-order (video)
By now, we hope you're mighty familiar with FXI's Cotton Candy -- the much anticipated pocketable computer that just became available for pre-order. We've previously shown photos of the device running both Ice Cream Sandwich and Ubuntu, but now we're able to bring you a video demonstration that may help you better understand what this tiny beast is all about. At the core of the Cotton Candy system is the Exynos 4210 SoC, which capably pushes 1080p video without batting an eye. As such, FXI hopes the miniature computer will gain traction with consumers who want an unobtrusive (and silent) media center or gaming setup in their home. To this end, the company will include the Polkast app for easy access to content and will also bundle games with the system -- though it's not yet able to share specific titles. Those with a sweet tooth may taste the delights of Cotton Candy in March, which will sell for $199.

Google Talk Guru answers questions via your IM app

google talk guru answersBots -- like the kind which automate IRC rooms and Google Wave -- are a good thing to know about. There are plenty of useful bots worth knowing about, too, including the Google Talk Guru.

Just add guru@googlelabs.com to your GTalk buddies, and you can start firing off questions. Lifehacker suggests that the same types of queries supported by Google SMS will work, though we didn't have any luck getting a response out of the Guru with phrases like "score detroit red wings" or "sushi R3N 1Y1."

Still, Guru does answer a good variety of questions and it works right within your favorite IM app. It's well worth adding to your friend list, especially for getting answers on the go on your mobile device of choice.

Hands-on with the ASUS Transformer Pad 300

Android Central

Along with the Padfone and Transformer Pad Infinity, ASUS unveiled the Transformer Pad 300 at Mobile World Congress this week. The Transformer Pad 300 is best described as a budget version of the Transformer Prime -- if there is such a thing as a budget quad-core tablet. In any case, it's mainly the screen resolution and build that separates the Pad 300 from its higher-end (and likely more expensive) siblings.

The Pad 300 is constructed of plastic as opposed to aluminum, and the resolution is limited to 1280x800, compared to the Infinity's dizzying 1920x1200. But that's still nothing to sniff at, and the IPS displays used by ASUS look great, even at the lower resolution. And although it's chunkier, and made of plastic, the Pad 300 still feels good -- if a little bulkier -- in the hand. We should probably mention that laptop docking functionality is included too, just as you'd expect for a Transformer series device, and the business of docking the tablet is just as seamless as it's ever been.

The Transformer Pad 300 is loaded with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which flies along on NVIDIA's quad-core chip. ASUS has included its usual selection of widgets and subtle changes to stock Android, which will be familiar to current Transformer and Transformer Prime owners.

Join us after the break for our initial hands-on video of the ASUS Transformer Pad 300.

Both devices are slated to land at the retailer on April 23. The Xperia P will set you back £378 inc VAT and the Xperia U a very reasonable £238.80. Boomshine is a soothing-yet-frustrating time waster

boomshine
One click; just one single well-aimed click. That's all you get in Boomshine.

That single click triggers a chain reaction; circles start exploding, and other circles colliding with the shockwaves explode as well, creating their own shockwaves, which then catch other circles.

It's been done before, yes, but this one is a great iteration. The soundtrack is mellow, with lots of piano and some nice percussion (not electronic - it sounds like drums).

At each level you need to make a certain number of circles explode to go on to the next level. I got up to level 12, where you get 60 circles and need to make 55 of them explode. And then I kept trying and trying, but simply couldn't get it. I did get to 54 circles a couple of times, but as they say, you don't get points for trying.

There's no time limit, so you can carefully study the pattern of motion and place your click at the exact right place to create the best chain reaction. I've found that clicking near the middle of the screen works quite well, especially if the balls are slowly moving in that direction. By the time the first shockwave dies off, the oncoming balls usually hit it and the chain reaction continues.

What level did you reach? Screenshots please!

Is MOG Trying to Sell Itself? [Streaming Music]

CNET says the streaming music service MOG has quietly approached entities in the digital music space about buying the company. MOG says they're doing just fine, but of course, have offered little in the way of numbers to back that up. Are the streaming music services starting to find the floor in the freemium race to the bottom? More »

Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale review: The best way to track your weight on iPhone and iPad

Withings is a simple, beautiful way to keep track of your weight and BMI right on your iPhone or iPad and achieve your health goals!

The Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale brings new, highly mobile technology to bear on an age old task -- keeping track of your weight over time. We've had scales in one form or another for years. The old analog scales that you stepped on and watched the needle move across the numbers in joy or horror. The big, white doctor's scale that they tapped into place to measure both height and weight. The digital scales with the big red numbers that held your hopes in their flashing lights. Those all measured our weight, but they didn't keep track of our weight. We were left to scribble or type in the measurements on our own, and as we all know, the requirement for manual recording creates a remarkable point of failure. Withings does all that heavy lifting for you. You set it up, step on it, and it records everything you need, and sends it to your iPhone or iPad for easy tracking at any time. And it isn't just limited to tracking your weight. It can track your whole family.
